Welcome to Varsity Monthly
Unfortunately too often we read about incredibly gifted athletes that are literally not able to make the grade. Perhaps they aren’t able to get the test scores needed to get into a college or perhaps it’s that they can’t maintain their grades to stay eligible once they are in. Or in too many cases they aren’t able to stay out of trouble off the field or adhere to the NCAA rules regarding remuneration. Sadly the headlines they make for what they do off the court becomes the story for which they are remembered most.
I’m happy to say that this month’s stories are illustrations of how academics, good citizenship and athletic excellence can and do go hand in hand in the Mid Michigan area. Laingsburg’s Shelby Hurst has achieved a 3.99 GPA while being a record-setting, three-sport, four-year varsity athlete. While her statistics and athleticism are incredible, she is most lauded for her leadership and cerebral play.
New Lothrop Public Schools continue to demonstrate that program-wide athletic supremacy does not have to come at the sacrifice of academic excellence. The discipline with which the athletes perform on game night is the same that they use to excel in the classroom every day.
Next month we are excited to bring you the first annual Varsity Monthly Girls Basketball Dream Team and it would be tough to find a harder working group of student-athletes anywhere. Our biggest struggle was in narrowing it down to just 10 girls.
How refreshing to know that we don’t have to look any farther than Mid Michigan area sporting events or classrooms to find role models.
